Dance-For-Camera short film by Jocelyn Silk
Path to Creation
Overview
“Path to Creation” is a dance-for-camera short film that explores the process of creating an original piece of art. This is a three part short film breaking down the creative process into three individual steps, first “Brainstorming”, second “Creative Block”, and third “Creative Fulfillment”. Each section contains original choreography performed by Alma College Dancers. The Film attempts to capture the Highs and Lows of pursuing a creative career, through the medium of dance.
Purpose and Process
Alma College has had an exponential growth of talented dancers committed to the school. Participating in dance team, dance company, student run organizations like student choreography concerts and PDX. With such talent being so plentiful at this school I wanted to highlight our school dance program with my senior capstone. The arts are always in need of more support and resources. The dance program at Alma, while large, could benefit from better media, and marketing materials. With my project I hope to highlight the talent at the school through the medium of film and drawing attention to dance for the camera as a noteworthy aspect of the dance program.
My process was to choreograph three routines over my time at Alma using Alma dancers to describe the creative process. Using dance to highlight the emotional highs and lows of making art. Filming went on for multiple days completing test trials for lighting and shot sizes. The final project is a culmination of my own choreography and artistic vision of the creative process that highlights the talent of Alma College Dancers.
