Purpose
The purpose of this project is to show how everyday people react to worldly events; how we all process information differently and what we do with what we’re given. After the show, I plan to submit my film to student film festivals in the midwest and use it as a key part of my portfolio.
The Process
Writing
My short film was inspired by the ending of "Don't Look Up," where everything's falling apart but life still goes on. It's about a student trying to finish a paper while the world is ending around them. I wanted to show how tough it is for students, dealing with all the stress and uncertainty of college life. The movie explores how overwhelming it can feel, like you're trying to do your homework while the sky is crashing down. Being a college student myself and originally writing this in my sophomore year, it was cathartic to put all of my feelings down on the page.
Research
As I got ready to make my film, I took inspiration from slower-paced films like Chloe Zhao's "Nomadland". I paid close attention to how these films take their time to tell a story and develop characters slowly. By studying how the plot unfolds and how the characters change over time in "Nomadland," I aimed to make my film just as deep and meaningful within my limited time limit. I wanted my audience to feel like they were on a journey with my characters, seeing how they deal with their challenges and emotions.
Feedback
After gaining some feedback throughout my process, I got some suggestions on how to go about telling my story in a nonlinear way, not just straight from start to finish. I looked into different ways to structure the story, making sure it still made sense but also kept people hooked with the slow pacing. With this feedback, I aimed to make my film more exciting and memorable for the audience.
