The Social Experiment
Overview
The Social Experiment is a Content Production team in the form of an ongoing YouTube Channel. The focus of the channel is content on multiplayer video games, which typically have harsh, angry or toxic vibes. However, The Social Experiment will feature a far calmer experience while still showing that friendly banter that is common in multiplayer games. The Social Experiment group consists of four people all under screen names: Sean, as "LENOP" and the producer of the channel and one of the editors; Pure, the artist; Venger, another editor; and Moonybow, also an editor and the one who brought the four together in the first place.
Purpose and Process
The goal of The Social Experiment is to provide entertaining gaming content with a unique focus. Many group gaming channels have a sort of harsh edge to their commentary and interactions, which can be fun, but I feel it has encouraged that behavior to an unhealthy degree. People in online social spaces interact with toxicity in non-friendly ways. The Social Experiment seeks provide similarly entertaining content with similar banter, but not as harsh in terms of volume or anger.
Creating The Social Experiment was not a solo process. For one, we have been a small, but established group. We've been live streaming on Twitch (twitch.tv/pure_plus) for a while, and we have a Discord server with nearly 50 members and counting. However, our content has been little more than those streams. Three total videos had been made prior, but they were scattered across the channels of our group. I made The Social Experiment channel to house our content and build our community further.
The creation of the channel was simple enough; just repurpose an email that I wasn't using, make a new YouTube channel for it, and invite the team to have editing and upload access to the channel. Calling attention to it was the tough part. The team and I told a few of our friends about the channel, and we gained 7 subscribers from that, Venge uploaded a 5-hour compilation of an old playthrough, which got us a few subscribers, but beyond that, growth relies on the success of our videos. Shorts are a great way to gain attention, so I plan to continue pull the best moments from our long videos to gain traction. The future of the channel is uncertain, but for as long as we keep streaming and playing games, we've got content to make.
